Billabong was founded in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant.
At first, they designed and created board shorts at their home and then sold them to local surf shops. Surfers soon realised the durability of Merchant’s shorts were the result of his triple-stitching technique. The sales progression gradually led to company sponsored contests and special events in an effort to attract the attention of professional watersport competitors. By the 1980s, Billabong board shorts were present throughout Australia.
As the brand gained increasing levels of attention, it began to expand into other board-sports including skate, snow and wake.
Today, the brand is a household name to active lifestyle enthusiasts across the world. With their bold motifs, distinctive colours and seafront styling, the brand looks equally at home worn on the street or on the beach.
Billabong clothing supports the brands philosophy of high quality sports focused products with leading designs. Their product range had become a fashion symbol in its own right appealing to not only surfers but anyone with a passion for fashion or quality.
